LOSS OF AWAROA.

ABANDONED AT SEA. ALL HANDS EXONERATED. (Received 10.30 a.m.) y.EI BOURNE, this day. The Court of Marine Inquiry found that the steamer Awaroa was battered by a gale in Bass Strait, and that her master and crew were justified in abandoning her. The Court expressed the opinion that the vessel at the time of her abandonment would not have remained afloat any length of time, and further found that the vessel was apparently seaworthy, not improperly loaded, or overloaded. The Court was unable to determine the cause of the leak.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) The small Holyman Company's steamer Awaroa, which on July 24 was on her way between Hobart and Melbourne with a general cargo, sprung a leak in a gale and began to fill rapidly. The crew of J3 worked in water all night at the pumps and jettisoned her timber cargo. They launched a lifeboat, which was smashed, and then a second one, in which they were picked up'exhausted near Cape Liptrap by the steamer Huntingdon, which answered the distress signals.
