A PUBLICITY STUNT.
GLORY FOR WOULD-BE SHERIFF. LOS ANGELES, June 3. Press agents resort to nearly every crime to bring movie favourites into the news, and there was open-eyed wonder when three truck drivers confessed to a gigantic plot to kidnap Mary Pickford, Jackie Coogan and Pola Xegri, the film celebrities. It transpired to-day that the publicity was not sought at the instance of the film stars but had been designed to reflect glory on the Police Department, so that a candidate for the position of sheriff could obtain sufficient glory by the capture of the kidnappers to sweep him into office.
