MAORIS APPEASED.

« MR. STEWART'S DISCLAIMER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ROTORUA, Tuesday. A meeting of the Arawa tribe on Monday night considered a letter from Mr. E. Stewart repudiating the statements alleged to have been made by the recent American visitors, and carried ft motion expressing pleasure at receiving a letter disclaiming any intention, imp'l.'d or expressed, of insulting the Maori race. The Arawa spokesmen declared that they never believed the statements at* tributed to the American visitors were true, but considered them a pure invention. No one of the Arawas would make such accusations against the Government as those put into the mouths of their American guests. The tribal leaders did not consider the original accusations v/orthy either of notice or credence, but the unfortunate publicity given to the matter forced their attention upon it and compelled a denial in the interest of the whole Maori race.
