NELSON, this dayThe New Zealand chess championship tourney was continued on Saturday, when the second rouud was played. Results: SECTION" A. rurdy v. Moir.—This was a queen's pawn game. In the opening Moir obtained a strong position. The middle game exchanges gave Moir a much stronger queen side pawn position. Purdy established, a strong pawu centre, though his queen* pawn was weak. Moir won this pawn neatly, aud played a careful end game, securing a well-earned victory. G. F. _)odds v. Stenhoiisc—The latter played Indian defence to the queen's pawn game and obtained a fine position. Dodds, in breaking Stenhousc's attack, gave him. a passed pawn at the queen's fifth. Further exchanges weakened Stenbouse's position. A strong advance of well-supported pawns gave Dodds a well-deserved victory. Fairburn v. Anderson. —Falrhurn obtained a singular pawn development, but as an inverted wedge with side pawns w_U advanced. . Anderson castled on queen* side and opened the king side flies, and with rooks and queen launched an attaclc that brought checkmate.
E. A. I licks v. ißulloek.—An intereff tin* French defence game, evenly and keenly contested. The exchanges " left. Bullocwith doubled pawns on the kind's fll«Hicks later raptured the advanced pawn, and playing faultlessly won the game. SECTION B. 'K. E. iHicks v. Gyles.—Buy Lopez opening. Hicks, in the early stages, gave v*. bishop for knight. Gyles opened tha bishop's tile for rook, and with queen and bishop added made a formidable attacE upon Hicks' castled king. Hicks' piece*! were cramped, aud he could not make an adequate defence. Gyles doubled his rooW to support, the queen, bringing about the complete downfall of Hicks. Keeling v. Cole.-Cole obtained a fin_ position in .the Sicilian game by exchanges. Kelllng spoilt the force of Cole's attach, and broke Cole's king side pawn position. Cole advanced a king side pawns with great effect, but omitted the crowning move, "veiling seized the opportunity, and wltH rook and queen mated Cole in five moves. '•'. W. Dodds v. V" aughan.—Vauzhan goon took over the attack in the Ponda.nl game adopted by Dodds. and In the middle game won .1 minor piece.
