SELF-RELIANT DEFENCE.

I AN AUSTRALIAN HOPE. (Received 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Speaking at a luncheon to Senator Pratten at Newcastle, the manager of the Broken Hill Proprietary, Ltd., said an offer had been made by Vickcrs, Ltd., England, to associate with tbe Broken Hill Proprietary, with the object of manufacturing armour plate and shells in Australia. Senator Pratten expressed the hope that within the next ten years armour plate would be made in Australia, and that -we would have an actual scientific basis for our own national defence. He also hoped that within the same period Australia would be linked up with other parts of the Anglo-Saxon race living in the littoral of the Pacific, thus ensuring for all time peace in the Pacific.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
