AUSTRALIA AND U.S.A.

JAMES A. NLJELDER TALKS. THE PROMOTION OF TRADE. (By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received XI a.m.) XEW YORK, October 21. Mr. James A. M. Elder, who succeeds Mr Donald Mackinnon as Australian Commissioner to the United States, has arrived in, Kew York. He commenced to-day on the wonderful reception accorded to Lira on the Pacific Coast. The White Australia policy is highly endorsed here, and the view is expressed , that it is as important to the United States as well as to Australia. The Commissioner was impressed by the wonderful development along the Pacific Coast, especially at Los Angeles, whose progress was indicative of its importance to Australian trade. He ex- ; pressed his belief that freight facilities between Australia and Los Angeles would naturally follow. The Commissioner intends to make an immediate study of the meat, fruit and dairy produce markets of the United States. He believes that if adequate freight facilities can be provided through the Panama, Australian fresh fruits could find a profitable market in the Eastern centres of the United States. Commenting on the balance of trade, he said that Americans themselves consider it would be better if the United States purchased more Australian goods. Mr. Elder hopes to get a supply of current news from Australia by broadcast, newspapers and radio, and further to use every possible means for Australian publicity, including Australian cinema films.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
