THE ROAD TO MARAETAI.

I ■ — LOAN PROPOSALS. A deputation of ratepayers of Maraetai waited upon the Manukau County Council yesterday . afternoon, Mr. Kent (Earl Kent, and Massey) being spokesman. He said they had attended the I Council with regard to work required to ! be done on the road to Maraetai, from j Maungaroa-Creek down to the wharf. IHe -explained the object was to form about four- miles and metal the 'whole ' distance. Some small by-roads were ! included in the scheme. A scheme for i a road round the waterfront would save about, five miles, but the cost would be prohibitive. He asked on behalf of the ■ deputation that a poll of the ratepayers be taken as to authorising a'loan for ! the purpose of making the road. It was also urged that the work be considered -urgent, so that operations could be^got on with this summer. The chairman, Mr. T. M. Raters, said there was a portion of the previous loan unexpended, but that was for carrying the road further along the waterfront. ' There was a Government grant of £500 if or that road, but it was possible that had lapsed. Mr. J. Grainger said there was on the estimates for the year £500 for that 'road. The clerk said it was a subsidy of I£ 1 for £2 10/. I Mr. Kent asked if the Council favoured the idea of holding a poll. : The chairman said the Council would try and catch up the arrears of work as 1 quickly as possible now that the new . engineer had been appointed. It was intimated that the poll would be taken in due course.
