WHAKATANE NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, Monday. The announcement that the Whakatane Borough rates are to be reduced by I'd in the £1 this year, and a further 2d next year would so to prove that Whakatane has got over ite troubles, and is on the upgrade again. A movement is on foot to form an Electric Power Board for the Whatatane and Opotiti counties. A meeting of delegates from the various local bodies is to meet shortly to consider the question. A conference was held at Matata between representatives of the Bay of Plenty and Tauranga Hospital Boards to consider the question of providing a home for aged people. The position of the leading senior teams in the Eugby club championship is as follows:— Ruatokl 12 points, Paroa 10, Taneatua 8, Poroporo 4, Whaiatane 2. The Taneatua Tennis Club's plain and fancy dress dance was a great success, about 60 couples being present. The ladles' first prize costume was won by Miss Gwen I Stone (Harem Lady) and the gentlemen's Iby Mr. McGorgan (clown). A pleasant fum-Uon was held at the Whakatano school, when Mr. P. Keegan, patron of the Whakatane Beautifying Society, and Dr. Wadmore, president, attended to present the Whakatane Agricultural Society's silver cup to the winner o£ the best essay on afforestation at the last show. Mr. Fred Slnsell was the winner this year. ______^^_^__
