A NOTED SALVOR.

SIR F. YOUNG AT DUNEDIN.

(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day.

Sir Frederick Young, the noted salvage expert, visited Port Chalmers, where his presence recalled his previous visit in 1890 in connection, with the sinking and refloating of the barque Ranee. The Eanee's cargo of shale ignited, and, other methods failing,- it was decided to sink her in order to extinguish the fire in the hold. She was towed over to an adjacent sandbank. The local Volunteer Company fired many shots from their big guns, but did not succeeded in piercing the waterline and letting the water into the hold. Eventually a charge of guncotton was used to enlarge a shot hole sufficiently to permit the rush pf water into the hold.

The next problem was to • refloat the Ranee, and this had been accomplished when Sir Frederick arrived from Singapore on behalf of the Salvage Association. While at Port Chalmers on that occasion Sir Frederick was initiated a member of the Port Chalmers Marine Lodge of the Masonic order, and yesterday he met a number of officers of his mother lodge.
