NEWSPAPER OFFICE FIRE

FIVE LINOTYPES DESTROYED.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, this day.

A serious fire occurred at the "Southland News" office at 6.30 this morning, resulting in the total destruction of five linotype machines and bad damage to three others. Owing to the fireproof construction the flames were confined to the linotype room, the roof of which was destroyed.

The fire was caused by the fusing of the rubber tubing supplying gas for heating the metal. The damage, approximately £8000, was covered in the South British Company. It will be Several weeks before the machinery can be replaced. There was no publication today, but arrangements have been made for continuous issue from to-morrow.
