BIBKESTHEAD. The fortnightly meeting of the Blrktn. bead Boroogh Council was held laat night The Mayor, Mr. E. C. Walton, presided* and Councillors E. G. akeates, Albert BμfleW. Lester MoUer, F. A. GUpin and Thee. Farrell were also present. Water.—The report of the waterworks engineer stated that 1,700,000 gallons of water bad been used in Blrkenbead during July. The level of Lake Takapuna was 5 feet S inches above sea level. j|r. Poppy Day Fund.—Mr. Gllpln reported on behalf of the Reserves and Cemetery Committee, recommending that the cemetery be tidied up. Including cutting the long grass, trimming the hedges, and tarring and sanding the paths, it was reeolved to apply the Poppy Day remlttanece, with the Council's subsidy, to this purpose, tbe wort to be carried out by returned soldiers. Ferry Timetable. —Representations were made by tbe Birkdale Ratepayers' Association that the alteration of the 10.10 p.m. boat from Auckland to 10.20 p.m. would prejudice the bng trip to the next boat. The Conncll decided to pass on this Information to tbe Devonport Ferry Company, members pointing out that an alteration to 10.15 p.m. wonld be more suitable. Gag Mains-—Mr. Skeates intimated that, in reply to a deputation, the manager of tbe Birkenhead and Nortbcote Gas Company bad undertaken that the work of re(storing the footpaths, disturbed by the laying of e*s mains, would be started immediately. Subdivision. —The plan of the subdlTlsloa of Mr. T. Nixon's property was approved. AVOHDAIE BOROUGH COVMCTL, A meeting of tbe Arondate Borough Conncll wae held yesterday evening, tlie Mayor, Mr. W. J. Talt presiding. There were also present Councillors J. B. Clarke. W. J. Thompson, H. Potter, A. F. HaElam, T. IV. -Wilson, J. V. Riesterer, C. E. Fe«nm, and A. E. Biaekman. Sanitation.—Tbe Health Department forwarded an extract from tbe N.Z. Gazette making regulations under tbe Health Act as to the cleansing, ventilation, sanitation and disinfection of theatres, picture halls and concert rooms, and also an extract from the "Gazette" making reflation. under the same Act with respect to the registration, construction and sanitation vt cattle salevards. Drainage Finance.—The Hon. C. 3. Part wrote re Avondale drainage, and stated that tbe Minister of Finance was unable to Increase tbe amount that may be loaned to local bodies in any one year by the State Advances Office, and advising the Department to make application to the Government Insurance Department or to tbe Public , Trustee. Bunding Areas. —A letter was received from the Rev. TV. T. Blight protesting against any reduction in tbe building site areas as prescribed in tbe present by-laws. It was resolved that no steps be taken at present to alter the by-laws dealing with minimum area for dwellings. Water Supply.—The turncock reported having laid five new services, inspected the whole of the fire-plugs In the borough, and Unshed out tbe dead ende of the water mains in several streets. Building Permits.—The building Inspector reported that G permits bad been issued daring tbe past fortnight, at an estimated cost of £155 T. and tliat at the present time 9 buildings were In course of erection.
