Despite statements made to Acting- ] Detective Barling admitting the offences, < George William McDonald (35), a '< painter, pleaded not guilty in the Police ■', Court this morning to three charges ot i obtaining goods by false pretences. He * •was committed to the Supreme Court j for trial at the nest criminal cessions J in October. According to the statements produced J by the detective, accused went to a shop in Karangahape Road and ordered painter's materials from George Simp- . son, the value of the goods being £15 , ]f>/. At a later date he called again, < and ordered goods to the value of £28 , 17/ from Duncan McGregor Simpson, j He admitted having represented to the shopkeepers that he had a contract near < Maungaturoto, for Which the materials i were required, and he explained that he 1 would pay later on. Engaging the eer- J vices of a carrier, he cent a motor lo"rry round to the shop on May 21, and had < the materials conveyed to another ' painter, to whom he sold them for £I'J ' 11/. "I was sick; too sick to work, and ] had to get money somehow," said accused in his statement. Other materials j were obtained by accused from a Queen Street -firm, these being removed to the house of a friend. They were , valued at £3 18/. "I did not attempt to sell them, and they are still there," f eaid accused. Detective Barling stated c that, when interviewed, (McDonald said r he was going to plead guilty. A charge respecting the alleged theft t of a gold ring, valued at £1, was also o preferred against accused, but was not •. heard thie morning. 1 ___—. J
