KING COUNTRY LICENSES.
i< OPPOSITION BY CHURCHES. With reference to the movement which is on foot to introduce into the King Country area the licensed sale of abo'holic liquors, resolutions protesting against the proposal were passed by the congregations of a large number of the churches of various denominations laat Sunday. Similar action was taken in many churches throughout the Dominion on the same day, the resolution which woe submitted affirming that the introduction of the liquor trade to the King Country would involve a national disgrace by reason of the dishonouring of the pact entered into with the Maoris •in 1884, whereby a solemn undertaking was given that "no license shall be granted" in the King Country. After asserting, that the granting of licenses would be fraught with the gravest peril to the Maori race and would induce their physical, social and moral degradation, the resolution asked that the Government resist the attempts of the interested parties and honourably abide by the pact.
