JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS.
GETTING IVTO LIVE. Regulations have been made to fit in the work of junior high schools in respect to free places at secondary schools and proficiency certificates. The Education Board was notified to-day of the gazetting of an amendment to the regulations by which a pupil who has satisfactorily completed an approved course of instruction in the ninth grade of a junior high school, and has gained a certificate of proficiency therein, is eligible for a junior free piace It is also provided that a pupil who has completed an approved course of instruction in the eighth grade, and, in the opinion of the senior inspector, has made sa tiefactory progress in the ninth grade, shall receive a certificate of proficiency. Respecting Kowhai Junior High School, the Education Department reported to the Board to-day that, in view of the uneven nature of the school site, it had approved a grant of £450 for ground improvements, and was prepared to find £ for £ subsidy on all voluntary contributions above that sum. Several members of the-Board commented on the fact that Kowhai School was very much more liberally treated by the Department than were the country schools, and hopes were expressed that this was an earnest of the 'Department's policy towards all schools.
