AWARDED TO WIDOW. RAILWAY CKOSSING FATALITY. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, thie day. Maud Barbara Canning, of Wellington, was successful in her petition for damages in connection with the death of her husband, John Edward Canning, it Porirua railway crossing in October of last year. The jury awarded her £1000 damages, to be divided between herself and two children. Deceased was driving a motor lojrf and collided with the north-bound Wel-lington-Auckland express. The injuries he sustained proved fatal. The sum claimed was f 2000. The jury considered the train was travelling at excessive speed, that whistling was unsatisfactory, and thit« warning bell should be installed at the crossing; that Canning exercised reasonable care when approaching the crossing. On behalf of petitioner, Mr. Kennedy moved for judgment in favour of suppliant on the jury's findings, and thie motion and a cross motion by the Crown for judgment or foi a nonsuit were adjourned for further consideration by Mr. Justice Salmond.
