CREW TAKES TO THE BOATS NEAREST HELP 400 MILES AWAY (By Telegraph.-Press Association) WELLINGTON, this day. The Post Office has received * meesasi from the radio station at Awanui statine that S.O.S. calls were received from the steamer Trevesaa at 7.36 tjn., in fct 28.45 south, long. 85.42 east. The meisage stated that the Trevessa was goinn down, and asked for help immediately. The Tregenna is going to her assittance, but is 400 miles away. At 8.3 a.m. a message from the Trevessa. stated that the steamer wae settling down, and the crew were going to the boats. At 8.6 the Trevessa was etill calling 5.0.5., but the signals faded with the daylight. At 7.28 a.m. a message was received from the Naldera instructing all station* to cease transmitting. At 7.32 a.m. Perth received messages from the Boon&li and Gilgai, who said they hear the 8.0.8. from the Trevessa. At 7.36 the S.O.S. was received from the Trevessa, in latitude 28.45 8, longitude 85.42 E. At 7.49 the Borda asked the Treveua what was wrong. The Borda also received a message from the Naldera saying: "You are not near that 5.0.5." At 7.58 a.m. S.O.S. was received from the Trevessa: "I am the Treveeea gome down. Come quick." At 7.59 the Trevessa was informed by the Tregenna: "I am making for you I am distant from you 400 miles." At 7.59 a.m. all stations|received a message from the Trevessa: "Your signals are weak," and repeated her position. At 8 a.m. the Trevessa received a message from the Tregenna: "Sorry you faded." At 8.3 a.m. the Trevessa sent: "Settling down; going to boats." At 8.5 a.m. the Tregenna said: "I tm distant from him 400 miles, and am making for him." The position given by the Treveita places her due west of Western Amtralia and almost in a. line between Amtterdam Island to the south-west and Keeling Island to the north-east, in the Indian Ocean. The steamer cleared Port Pirio on May 15 for the "United Kingdom ■with a cargo of wheat. She was at Auckland in March, having arrived on the morning of the 13th from Sydney (Nova Scotia).. Louisburg, St. Johns, and New York. She discharged general cargo here and at Southern ports, thence proceeding to Australia to put out the balance.
