DISMASTED IN A GALE.
BARQUE'S ROUGH HANDLING, j DIFFICULT SALVAGE WORK. J MELBOURNE, April 4. The barque (larthsnaid, laden with I nitrates from lqttique, was struck by aj south-west gale at noon on Good I'ridav , off Cape Howe. During a heavy roll the topmast backstays parted, and in a few minutes the main topmast crashed. At the next roll the main yard came down. Oil was poured on the waves, the falling wreckage liming destroyed the lifeboats. At midnight the mainmast j went over the side. The steamer Zcalandic , was sighted toward morning and took the barque in tow. After three days' struggle she succeeded in salving her. The damage is estimated at £8,000. It is expected the salvage will amount to £15,000. The vessel will probaibly bo sold to defray expenses.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) i
