PASHA D'ANNUNZIO. # ANOTHER DRAMATIC ENTRY. (Beceived 10.30 a.m.) * ROME, February 27. Gabriele d'Amrunzio has been appointed Honorary Generalissimo of tiic Turkish Army with the rank of Pasha. He declares he is ready to take over effective direction of the troops.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
Gabriele D'Annunzio, tho foremcet Italian poet of his time, has played many parts in the limelight for which his supreme egotism craves. He turned his love affairs to literary use in a way that shocked Europe. When the Great War broke out and Italy stood out, he conducted a whirlwind campaign for intervention, and more than any other man he influenced public opinion in this direction. After serving in the war as an airman (although he was over fifty), he put himself at the head of tho movement that seized Fiume, and thereby caused serious international complications. Turned out of Fiume by the guns of the Italian Government, he has been relatively quiet of late, but is reported to have developed Socialistic leanings. "D'Annunzio admits frankly," says a biographer, "that he lives only for thrills and excitement. He could never sit back and endure the monotony oi being a plain, ordinary citizen. At various times during his life he has threatened to kill himself unless things picked up and began to happen. Bat so far he has never been called upon to make good his promises. Something has always happened!"
