OBITUARY.

MR. FREDERICK MAISTWARING. The death of Mr. Frederick Mainwaring at the age of 78 years removes a highly esteemed resident of Ashburton. Deceased was appointed clerk when Ashburton County Council was constituted and held office until his death. On account of failing health Mr. Mainwaringl was granted a year's leave of absence on full pay a fortnight ago. That was the first annual holiday he had accepted in 44 years. Deceased was clerk to Ashburton Hospital Board, Licensing Committee, and Coarsing Club. He was also acting secretary of the Ashburton Electric Power Board. MR, WILLIAM CHRISTIE. The death occurred this morning, at the age of 50 years, of a prominent resident of Victoria, British Columbia, Mr. William Christie. Deceased was for many years manager of the Canadian Pacific Telegraph Co. at Victoria. He retired from the service on account of failing health about ten years go. He left Victoria last February on an exten. ded sea voyage for the benefit of his health, but on arrival at Auckland had to leave the steamer to secure medical attention. He stayed a little while with his sister, Mrs. K. C. Cox, Mount St. John Avenue, but the •tate of his health necessitated his removal to Sister Wheeler's Xursing Home. In spite of every attention, death resulted this morning. Deceased has two other sisters, Mesdames A. S. Innes and Chrighton. The i:iterment has oeen fixed for !) a.m. to-morrow at Wai.karaka Cemetery.
