;i LARGER SCHOOLGROUND j REQUIRED. ! ii In pursuance of an undertaking by | i the Minister of Education to purchase | | an additional area of 2J acres of ground j 1 : for school purposes alongside the 'back , < portion of the Birkenliead infant school, I conditional on £200 of the £800 required ! being raised locally, a meeting of houseI holders was convened for last night in ! order to consider the best steps to adopt :to comply with the Hon. C. J. Parr's I requirements. j The chairman of the Northcote District School Committee, Mr. Robert DaT- ' low, who presided, referred to the good ' result of the recent efforts for raising | money for the development of the school ' grounds, when £180 was raised. He outi lined the work done so far, and stated ( there was a balance of £140 in hand, I besides any subsidy due from the Kdu- ! cation Board. I Mr. Jas. P. McPhail considered £100 I of this £140 could be advanced as a loan I towards acquiring the ground needed. The subsidy was payable on a limit of £100 in any one year. Some residents considered the ground sloped too much, and an alternative site I should be obtained, but the chairman I pointed out these matters were in the I hands of the Education Board and I Department, who had reported recom- ! mending the land contiguous to the ] present side school. i Eventually the meeting was adjourned I till the 27th inst., the general committee lof the school ground improvement fund Ito consider in the meantime the advisa--1 bility of granting a loan of £100, to be j repaid later out of the proceeds of further local efforts on that behalf.
