SPIRITS AND FORTUNES.
A PASTOR FINED £_. MISCHIEF OF DIVINATION. (By Telegraph. —rress Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The hearing of the charges against Pastor Page of the Spiritualistic Church jn three counts of using spiritualism to leceive, and three of fortune-telling, svas concluded this afternoon. The defence was that there was no svidence of deliberate deception. Counsel likened the defendant's work to that of Elatana. The magistrate said there was no difference between the defendant and an ordinary fortune-teller. The mischief was as great in the case of an honest diviner as in the case of a fraudulent charlatan. He had understood the defendant intended to deny the police evidence. Had he done so he would have been sent to gaol. He, however, preferred not to give evidence. The first J three charges were dismissed, and the defendant was convicted and fined £5 on the others, the alternative being one month's imprisonment.
