JLt the Stadium to-day Stanley Meßride (United States), 9.2, secured the decision on a foul over Bud Ridley (United States). 9.2, In the twelfth round, after a hardfought contest. MELBOURNE, April 8. Walter Ross defeated Jamito on a foul in the tenth round. BRISBANE, April 8. Paul Demsky knocked out Wave Gelkie la the fifth round.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) THE COOK-BECKETT MATCH. AUSTRALIANS FINE CONDITION. LONDON, April S. Judging by George Cook's winding-up trials at High Beech, his contest with Joe Beckett on Monday will be most intense. From the outset both fighters will seek an early knock-out. The general view is that the fight will not last 20 rounds. Cook's supporters expect that the end will come within 10 rounds, with Beckett floored. Cook weighs 1811b, his lightest weight since arriving in England. He Is 51b lighter than when he fought Carpsatier. In tbe final lightning round with his sparring partners, Cook revealed himself speedier than ever. Albert Lloyd, after two rounds with him, expressed the opinion that Cook is remarkably quick and cunning, and that he will give Beckett a lively time. Cooltold a representative of the Australian and New Zealand Press Association that it will be a hard fight, in every sense of the word, and will largely be a test of stamina and ability to withstand punishment. •' 1 anticipate." said Cook, ** that Beckett and I will hammer each other at close quarters. The going will be .so strenuous that the contest Is not likely to last the full distance. I do not under-estlmate Beckett's ability, for he has had greater experience, but I am 100 per cent better boxer than when I left Australia, and I have devoted considerable time developing a knock-out punch. My fight with Carpeutler taught mc many things. I expect to wear Beckett down and floor him within 10 rounds. 1 am particularly anxious to win ln order to pave the way to another challenge to Carpentler. I am delighted that Australian admirers offer to back mc to the extent of £1000 against the Frenchman." Mr. Lncas interjected: "In that case we make the stipulation that "Sporting Life' shall control the match and elect the referee. We will refuse to meet any more champions on their own terms and conditions." ~ Writing In the "Daily Telegraph. Mr. Bennison states: "Cook's outstanding qualities are an obvious liking for the gam?. Immense stamina and undying courage, bnt there is mncb crudeness in his fighting. Monday's fight will decide Beckett's future. It will not surprise mc if Cook beats him. Cook will then be entitled to claim that he ls the best boxer in the British Empire. If Beckett treats Cook as a man whose boxing education is only half finished, he will be surer of victory than I suspect he now It is understood that Carpentier now. thinks tbat Cook will be the wlpner. Cook's work at High Beech certainly has favourably impressed the critics. He. is a better physical specimen than Beckett, and ls splendidly trained.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) DEMPSEY SAILING FOR EUROPE. NEW YORK, April 7. Jack Dempsey. tbe heavy-weight boxing champion of the world, is sailing for Europe on Tuesday. He will visit England. France and Italy."and will give exhibitions. It is understood tbat he may fight. Beckett and Carpentier. as well as others, if matches can be arranged.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) BURNS TO FIGHT MOORE. LONDON, April 7. F. Burns' thumb is improving rapidly. He Is to fight Ted Moore at the National Sporting Club on May 15. —(A. and N.Z.)
