DEFENCE RETRENCHMENT.
DRASTIC IN SOOTH AFRICA. (Received 11.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, November 23. A message from Pretoria states that owing to h'nnncial stringency drastic retrenchment in the defence force will take place in January. A number of senior staff officers will be retired. It is suggested that the Government is contemplating reorganisation of the defence force on a modest scale. —(A. and N.Z.)
