A CUSTOMS UNION.
FIJI'S CLAIM. SUVA iFiji), November 28. Recently a gathering of commercial meu in New Zeaian.i expressed the wish and hope off a Customs Union with Australia. Such a union is a natural one, and to-day much more realizable than Tears ago. Fiji some months ago approached New Zealand for a similar purpose. A Commercial Commission came to Fiji and their report has been made, but the public are still in the dark a= to what conclusion? -were arrived at. Probably the subject has been conveniently shelved. But surely the question is of the first importance? The business men of Suva think so, ami a strong movement is under way to force a declaration from both New Zealand and Australia. The Australian Government will be approached through his Excellency with a request that preference be shown produce sent from Fiji. Fiji has removed voluntarily the Customs duties on all foodstuffs from the Commonwealth and the Dominion, with a few exceptions, -beside' admitting free agricultural and dairying machinery made in the Dominions. It is. then, surely not too much to ask that this friendly concession (which should mean increased trade) should be in some way reciprocated.
