THREE IN ONE
THE NEW RATING PAPERS. Auckland residents this morning received the usual periodical 1)11161 doux from the City Treasurer reminding them that a city's progress is the measure of the extent to which the citizens are prepared to foot the bill. To those who have not followed municipal affairs closely, the fact that the rate demands received this morning included the water-rate as well as the general rate, may have caused some mystification. The combination of the, demands, however, is in pursuance of the Council's decision arrived at some time ago,' and made public at the time. Formerly ratepayers were accustomed to receiving their rating papers in three instalments, . The general rate spread over the-period from June 1 to May 31, was the, subject of one demand, wfliile the -wates»rate : jvas demanded in two' instalments—January to-June and July-to December. As an administrative economy all these demands are • being combined, and to-day, for the first time, the ratepayers received the simultaneous call. Just by way of an additional shock, the increase of lid in the £ involved in the last determination of the rate was included in the demand received to-day.
