Lloyd's Shipping Register gives the following statistics of the world's shipping tonnage at the end of July, 1914, and at the end of June, 1919:— 1914. 1819. Steam shipping 45,-404,000 47,897,000 Sailing shipping -3,686,000 3,022,000 The tonnage of steam shipping owned by the principal maritime nations on the same dates is given as under: — 1914. 1919. Britain before the war owned 41.6 pc? cent, of the world's shipping and the United States 4.46 per cent. Britain nows owns 34.1 per cent, of the world's shipping and the United States 20.4 per; cent. The world's shipping losses during the war totalled 7,,473,000 tons, of which Britain lost about 5,000,000 tons. Lloyd's Register estimates that if there had been no war the world's shipping tonnage would have been increased by 9,966,000 tons, making a total lose due to the war, excluding the United States figures, of 14,200,000 tons. Bat America, as a result of the war, built 6,729,000 tone of shipping over her normal increase. Hence the net loss due ta the war is estimated at 7,473,000 tons. If allowance is made for loss of efficiency in construction and for the retention of old ships beyond their normal term of efficiency the net loss is 8,500,000 tons, equivalent to 12,500,000 tons dead weight.— (A. and N.Z.
