CHORAL SOCIETY AND CITY ORGAN.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Like your correspondent, V. H. Morton, I, too, was preseut at the recent performance of "Moses in Egypt," and, all things considered, a meritorious result was achieved. The idea for assistance from a big organ I cannot quite agree with, simply 'because the band proved fully capable to the requirements of a somewhat depleted choir, and even then had to be kept well in hand by the conductor. Again, the amalgamation of 'band and organ is at present I believe, unworkable, from -the fact that the wind instruments are of different pitch from the organ. To popularise this munificent gift of Auckland's leading music enthusiast to and for the people, the aid of the Choral Society need not be requisitioned, l'he Saturday recitals was the donor's idea of benefit to the people, which up to now have proved a costly and dismal failure, the giver of the gift and the public alike disappointed.—l am, etc. F. J. WHITTAKER.
