CATHEDRAL WAR MEMORIAL.
"LADY-CHAPEL" PROPOSED. A "lady-chapel ,, or side chapel in St. Mary's Cathedral was recommended by a mooting of parishioners on Wednesday as the most suitnble memorial to of the Cathedral parish who gave their lives in the war. The proposal was placed before the meeting by the Bishop of Auckland, who attended mererly as a parishioner. Dr. Averill said that lie hoped the parish would provide some memorial that would be worthy of the Cathedral and of the men who were commemorated. He could think of no better memorial than a ehapol attached to the Cathedral, and he had ;io doubt that former parishioners and other friends throurriioiit tlip diocese would be frlad to contribute to the cost of one. St. Mary's, said the Bishop, was one of the most beautiful wooden churches in the world, and the chapel, which would lonjr outlast the lives of all present, could be made in every way worthy of its purpose Rev. Dr. O'Callag'han, acting-vicar, heartily commended the proposal, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. H. \V. Wilson, that tlie vestry be asked to pro into the probable cost of the scheme and report to a later meeting. It was stated in discussion that the original design for the Cathedral included a laclycbapel on the north side of the chancel, but that for reasons of economy it was not erected, though opace was'left for its construction later. It was hoped that the ori<rinal plans migfht still be available. Reference was also made to the war memorial chapel in St. Mary's Church, Xe\v Plymouth, and the proposal for a very magnificent chapel of the same kind in the new Cathedral at Wellington.
