A YEAR'S WORK.

AMONG THE POOR. BENEVOLENT SOCIETY'S REPORT. INSUFFICIENT FUNDS. APPEAL TO PUBLIC. The thirty-fifth annual meeting of tlie .Auckland Ladies" Benevolent Society was held yesterday afternoon, when there was a lartre attendance of members present. The meeting transacted a deal of important business. The annual report, as road, stated that during another trying year the society had been able to successful}' carry on the benevolent work of the society. It had been a year clouded with regrets so far as the personnel of the committee was concerned. Two of the oldest members, Rev. Canon Nelson and M> Win. Brackenrig, had died. Both of them, the report continued, were ever ready to assist in the good work of benevolence They would lie much missed. The committee authorised letters of condolence to be sent to their widows and families. It was also reported that the president of the Ladies' Committee, Mrs O. 31. Nelson, was seriously ill. Members expressed the hope; that she would be soon re&tored to health, and again able to continue the benevolent work she has prosecuted as president of the committee for about 30 years. The committee regretted to report that Mr F. G. Ewington, who had been their secretary for about 30 years, was unable to stand for re-election again. The position would have to be immediately filled. It had been decided to bring publicly under their special notice the faithful, painstaking and devoted work of Mr Bart. Kent, their lion, treasurer. The committee felt bound to express their high appreciation of the zeal and ability with which he had done work indispensable to the society. On the motion of the chairman very hearty votes of thanks were accorded the retiring secretary and treasurer for their loyal services. The special effort last year to raise money for the society through Miss Knight's dance rehearsals was very successful. Mr bore the brunt of the work. The money raised, supplemented by the Government subsidy, relieved the committee of all anxiety about finance throughout last year. The ladies were strongly commended for tho great work they had accomplished with satisfactory results during the year. It was hoped that the public would adequately support the society with funds so that the poor of Auckland might be saved from as much suffering as possible that always accompanies hard times and destitution. "Year after year," said Mr Bart Kent, "we are faced with the problem of insufficient funds to carry out the work as it should be done. The public should see that our funds are built up so as to meet the calls for help." The report, along with the financial statement, was read and adopted. The latter showed the years donations to he .€50:!, including \tl4o from the Misses Knight's dance carnival, which left the total subscriptions received from the general public for the whole year at £301, an amount which was considered to be utterly unworthy for the city tor such work. ; Mr X. Alfred Xathan was re-elected president, and the following elected as vice-presidents: The Revs. E. C. liudd and W. E. Cillani, Rabbi Goldstein, the Hon. A. 11. Myers, Messrs. 11. B. Morton, and T. Peacock. The committee was reelected. The matter of the appointment of a secretary and treasurer was left to the executive. The meeting concluded with votes of thanks to the officers and members of the committee for their services during the year, also to those who had otherwise afded the work of the society.
