MAKING ENDS MEET.
W A_HI RETRENCHMENTS. A_TD INCREASED CHARGES. (By Telesraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. An adjourned special meeting of the Waihi Borough Council, in connection ■with the financial statement submitted by the Mayor showing a deficit of £4,670 on the estimated income and expenditure for the current year, was held last evening. It was resolved that the hospital rate •be levied to return £500 per annum; that the price of gas be increased threepence per thousand feet; that the sanitary rate he increased 2/ per annum; that the Hospital -Board be asked to reduce its expenditure at least £250 per annum. The principal discussion ensued on a proposal to reduce the number of borough employees. It was eventually decided to put off nine men. The method of selection was adjourned till next meeting.' 1 Minor curtailments, including the closing of the pound quarry, were also made. The question of municipal ownership of horses and drays was deferred until March 31 next, as was also that of the disposal of the sanitary farm and service. Total retrenchments amounted to £3,970.
