IRONSAND DEPOSITS.
STATE WORKS SUGGESTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Giving evidence before the Industries Committee, Mr. Morgan, Government geologist, stated that Parapara block would probably contain 63,000,000 tons of iron ore, averaging about 45 per cent of metallic ore, which was therefore of medium grade. The most extensive deposits of iron sand were near Patea, where 5,374,000 tons of high grade ore was believed to exist. In the production of pig iron he would try Parapara ore first as it could be worked more cheaply than Taranaki iron sand. He thought it better for the Government to build its own works than pay the subsidy that had been asked to assist private enterprise.
