CRY IN THE NIGHT.
SETTLER'S WEIRD EXPERIENCE. (ißy Telegraph.— Own Correspondent.) TAUMARL'XUI, this day. A well known old settler, Michael Burke, formerly a boarding-house keeper, has been admitted to the hospital suffering from wounds to his throat. Burke was staying alone on his farm at Otunui, and about dusk on Wednesday a neighbour, Mr. Fred Carrington, was in his whare with his sister, when they heard a noise like a sheep coughing. The sister thought it was a man calling out. Carrington went out, and seeing nothing, returned to the whare. The noise was heard again. Carrington again went out with a lantern. He found Burke on the bank of a creek, trying to call out. Burke was in a state of collapse, and was wearing only his shirt and trousers. He was suffering from wounds in his throat. With the assistance of neighbours Burke was brought into Taumarunui Hospital on the following day. He is now progressing favourably towards recovery.
