"COPPER TRAIL" CONTEST.
FOR RED CROSS FUNDS.
The "copper trail" competition be-1 twecn Auckland and Wellington, in aid' of the Red Cross, is -marked by much keenness on both sides. On Saturday the Auckland trail extended 21 miles to Opaheke, near Drury, and the Wellington trail 10 miles to Paremata, on the Manawatu line. Auckland thus having a lead of five miles. During last, week Auckland advanced ten miles and Wellington five.
The Auckland country districts are showing a great deal of enthusiasm. The committee of the Hamilton Soldiers' Club Fund decided a few days ago to suspend operations on behalf of the club and devote all its energies to collecting funds for the Red Cross. At I Clcvedon, which was lately visited by Mr. C. F. Biekford, honorary financial organiser, a number of means for raising money are being employed. A queen carnival election produced a very spirited contest, the successful candidate being Miss Elsie Dow. The other contestants were Mesdames McKenzie (wife of Major McKenzie) and A. Bell.
