CITIZENS FLEEING ACROSS THE FRONTIER. PARIS, March 22. News from Basle states that Monday's i British raid on Mannheim did enormous . damage. Many houses in several parts < of the town were ignited. Explosions j < were caused in a powder factory and the j' gasworks, and large holes torn 'in the i principal streets, holding up the tram- . ways. Firemen and soldiers were engaged ] for hours extinguishing the fires. The population w.ts seized with panic and lives in constant anxiety, fearing further raids. Many people, especially women and children, are leaving for Switzerland. The South. German newspapers continue their campaign against aerial ' reprisals, but Berlin, owing to its temporary safety, refuses to negotiate with the Allies.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
