POLICE COURT.

(Before Messrs. C'lias. Grant and ,W. J. Holdsworth, J.P.'s.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender forfeited bail. Percy Humphries (44) and Andrew Petersen (67), on charges of getting drunk when prohibited, were remanded till to-morrow. Alfred Frederick Young (38), for committing a nuisance on the street when he was under the influence of drink and resisting arrest, was sentenced to three months' hard labour. MISCELLANEOUS. Lucy Dupont (37 ), charged that she kept a house of ill-fame in Hobson Street, was remanded till to-morrow. Albert Richard Allen (36). on a charge of having failed to maintain his wife, was remanded to appear at Christchurch next Thursday. Walter Smith, for ill-treating a horse by working it when it was suffering from a sore back, was fined 40/- and 7/- costs. Natha Gshui, a Hindu, for a similar offence, was lined 40/- and 7/- costs; and Thomas Mills, for a like offence, was similarly fined. Percy J. Wigg was slso lined 40/- and costs for ill-treating a horse by beating it with a stick. THE SUNDAY DRINKS QUESTION Charges of trading on Sunday were made against Mrs. Lottie Murray, her daughter (Maud Murray) and an assistant (Gladys Smith). Sergeant Matthews stated that on June 10 he watched the soft drinks and confectionery shop of Mrs. Murray, in Urey Street. He saw two men get hop beer there and another man get a packet of cigarettes from Maud Murray. He spoke to Maud Murray about the matter. The following Sunday ho saw men served with drinks by Gladys Smith in the shop, and when he went in lie saw six men and a boy seated at tables, with hop beer before them, and just as he went in the girl came, along witli a plate of sandwiches, which were cut into squares, each forming about a mouthful. Defendants said that they didn't know till warned by the sergeant that they could not sell drinks in the shop. Gladys Smith added that she gave cakes and sandwiches with the drinks, but that she had just run out of cakos, and consequently gave only sandwiches to the men. Defendants were convicted, and Mrs. Murray was fined 30/- and 16/- costs ; Maud Murray and Gladys Smith each 10/- and II- costs.
