BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Dirkenhead Borough Council wus held on Wednesday. 'Tbe Mayor, Mr Jas. I. Mel-hall, presided, and Crs. Albert lladneld, F. J. Stewart, IS. G. SUeaies, E. C. Walton, Colin Mason, and Kobt. Webb were alsi present.

Works.—The foreman of works, Mr J. Malcolmson, reported that the footpaths in Maraina Teruce had heen cleaned anu shelled for the full length of both sides. Rugby Koacl footpaths, from l'ulinerslon lload to Albert Street, had been cleaned and shelled on both sides; Albert Street, had been cleaned anil shelled on both sides, aud from lcugby ltoad to the footbrielge on the. steep truck, shelled. The southern side of tlnewa Street had been -cleaned and shelled for the full length. Salisbury Itond foot path was now undergoing repairs, and would he shelled. At the l'm-iri Itond culling, at llirkilale wharf tho slips which occurred had been cleared away. Repairs had been effected to Hiiiciiina and Iluiiraki streets as far as the available shingle would allow, anel a further supply was now- required for both of these streets. Ab only temporary repairs could be carried out during the winter to tlie cutting ou the r.irkdnle Road, the foreman recommended temporary repairs be effected with fascines covered with ash. It was resolved to proceed Willi the latter work ou the lines suggested, and to secure further supplies of material for the main roads.

Motor Licenses.—Willi regard to tlie Council's support for a reduction of the required population of 5000 before a borough council could issue motor-car licenses. Mr Ale.\. Harris. „._•., wrote that lie liiul communicated with the Minister of Internal Affairs, who proposed to introduce legislation proposing thut any borough may become a •■registering authority" under the Motor Regulation Act. IDUS, though it was eloiihtful if any but war legislation would be put through the ensuing session of Parliament.

Hospital Contribution.—The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board intimated that the rate for the ensiling year would be 1-Cd iv the pound on the capital value, and that, therefore, Birkenhead's proportion would be £411 2/3.

Overdraft.—lt was decided to arrange for an overdraft with the Bank of New Zealand up to n £3000 limit.

North Auckland.—Tbe Mayor was appointed to represent the Council at the conference of the North Auckland Development Board ln August. Island Bay.—lt was resolved to earrv out necessary repairs to the roael and footpath at lslanel Bay, Birkdale. damage having been occasioned recently by tbe high tides.

Hydro-Electric Scheme.—The Mount Eden Council wrole that a deputation from the conference <,f local bodies concerned had been arranged with the Public Services Committee of the City Couu.-il for u-rt Wednesday afternoon, and the Mayor undertook to attend on Birkenhead's behalf. Hedges.—Firm measures were decided upon to compel the cutting back of all hedges to the boundary lines, and residents are to bo notified to this effect per medium of the daily Press; while throwing hedge clippings on the footpaths and water channels is to be strictly prohibited. Rustic Seat.—Mr F.
