TRANSPORT SUNK IN MEDITERRANEAN.
NO TROOPS ON BOARD WHEN ATTACKED. TWELVE OF THE CREW MISSING. / LONDON, October 6. / An official statement has been made that the Cunard liner Franconia was sunk by a submarine in the Mediterranean on Wednesday. The Franconia was engaged on transport duty, but was not carrying troops •when attacked. Twelve members of the crew are missing. A total of 302 persons were saved. The Franconia, a steel twin screw steamer of 18,150 was built in 1911 by Swan, Hunter, and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., of Newcastle, and was registered at Liverpool. She was 600 ft long and had a speed of Iβ knot*.
