GERMANS MASSED FOR DEFENCE OF KOVEL.
TWENTY-FOUR NEW DIVISIONS ON THE FRONT. PETROGRAD, October 5. The Germans arc endeavouring at all costs to hold the space between Kovel and Lemberg on which mainly depend the other issues of German strategy on the Russian front. It is semi-officially stated that since September Germany has dispatched twelve divisions to the southern sectors. With twelve divisions dispatched in June, altogether twenty-four have reinforced the south-western front. Out of twelve which arrived in September, nine divisions are now defending the approaches to Kovel, where yon Hindenburg, in the middle of September, had concentrated thirty-one divisions. Russian critics predict an obstinate resistance at Kovel. They are of opinion that from this most formidable concentration, the importance which the enemy command attaches to the Vladimir region can be gauged. v
