A German communique states: "There has been strong artillery activity on both sides of the Kiver Somme. There were four British attacks on OviUers and Bazentin-le-Petit during the afternoon, but they broke down in front of our lines. There was also an attack begun in the morning to the eastward of Bazentin. "Lively fighting developed on Saturday to the southward of the Somme and to the southward of Biaches. We hare reoccupied a portion oi Biaches, and taken over 400 prisoners. We repulsed with the heaviest losses French attacks near Barleux and Estrees. . :. ■■'.",,'\", • "The French were unsuccessful to the eastward of the Meuee, despite the fact that they brought up strong forces against Froide Terre and FJeury. The French repeatedly assaulted to the south-west of Thiaumont, and in the evening penetrated small sections of our first line's, where fighting.continues: -Infantry fire brought down an enemy aeroplane to the westward .of-iToos, and damaged a biplane"which landed in our lines; "The Russians were Unsuccessful in their counter-attacks against our lines in the region of S.vroboka, u-hich Prince Leopold's army captured, i The armies under General yon Linsingen are counter-attacking south of Lutzk." A German communique says:—"The British, in spite of heavy, losses, between Pozieres and Longueval. penetrated our lines and occupiedl Trones Wood.
