ALLIED SUCCESSES CAUSE ALARM IN GERMANY.
APPEALS TO THE PEOPLE AGAINST GENERAL; STRIKE. GENERAL STAFF ADMITS INFERIORITY IK ABTXUERT. (Received 12.35 p.m.) COPENHAGEN, July 16. "~ _ The ominous monotony of the Anglo-French'successes is reflected by the new tone in the German Press. Long, significant articles appear in the Berlin newspapers, exhorting the Germans not to listen to those campaigning in the country, demanding a general strike, with a view to ending the slaughter, and appealing to the populace for single-minded loyalty, and askinj_the people not to hamper the .military organisation by compelling it to deal with the enemies at home, while the British, French and Russians are standing in vast fronts, threatening to penetrate the Fatherland. One paper says: "Our enemies outnumber us two to one. Japan is sending enormous quantities of food and ammunition, while Germany depends on her own production. The British bombardment for seven days was murderous, and our staff admits its inferiority in artillery. Have w e any surety that the furious attacks on the gateway of our empire all fail 1 Therefore we must be united."
