Allen and Private Michael Carey, o-f the Sixteenth Keinforcetneati) ■who was on final leave, engaged in/-*' •heated argument, Carey apparently eng-. gesting that Allen was a shirker. The upshot was, it is alleged, that Carey bit -Mien three times in the face. .Allen did not retaliate, but stood with ;ius 'hands in his pockets, looking at hi» assailant. A constable went up to the soldier for the purpose of arresting him, but before he could do so Carey dealt; Allen another smashing blow ontto jaw, which knocked him down like a log, the back of his head striking the asphalt •with tremendous force. Allen was. rendered unconscious, and died in the hospital early this morning.. At the time of the assault both men were 'perfectly eober. Allen was a big,'heavy nmCarey is under arrest. ■ .
