The east-north-easterly gale whi(j raged over Auckland during Saturday and the early hours of Sunday morniij exhausted itself by daybreak yesterday, and although there have not yet beta definite indications that the weather ia to clear up, there was no recurrence of the high winds to-day. Until about ZS\ o'clock on Saturday afternoon there haj been no rain, though the skies w e « threatening, but at that hour ra\n-eej in and there were intermittent ehoweij until about 11 p.m., when a heatj downpour commenced, a total of 1.81 ■inches of rain being recorded by the rain. gauge in Albert Park fo,r the 24 bouri ending at 9 a.m. on Sunday. As the gale increased in violence on Saturday afternoon the waters ofj.tne inner harbour became very rough, in} the ferry Bteamere on the runs between Auckland and Bayswater, and Auckland and Devonport had some trying tripe, passengers being thrown irom their seats. • •• ■
At different points on the waterfront damage was caused by the gale. -£\ Kohimarama beach on Saturday niglj the strong wind driving the water- at high tide carried heavy seas up to the fences and retaining walls, causing considerable damage. In one place the waves battered down ipart of. an iroa fence, and the water got in a concrete retaining wall, causing a le*vy piece to break away. At Devonport about fifteen feet of tlie stone work of the embankment to the west of the .Vie. toria wharf was carried away, and th* wooden handrail over the same distance collapsed.
A landslide at Mr. W. HortonV froi| farm at Albany carried away numbeii of trees and a quantity 'of soil, »nd further damage was caused by tin debris being washed on to the aephilt yard at the house. The railway service was not affected by the storm. There were no landslips and the timetable - was maintained tb.TOUgb.out. KAIHU RAILWAY FLOODED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspooieut) DARGAVILLE, this day. One of the heaviest floods on record occurred here yesterday. On the Kaital railway on Saturday night the "W»tej was up to the carriage floors.
