ENEMY'S RENEWED ATTACK ON VERDUN.
INTENSE BOMBARDMENT AND LIQUID FIRE. FOKT ON HILL 304 LOST AND HECAFTUBED. (Received 9.30 a.m.) # LONDON, June 30. An official communique states:— V In Belgium at eight o"clock last night, following artillery fire, the Germans attacked a salient near the road from Xieuport to Lombaertzyde. Our immediate counter-attack ejected the Germans from an clement of a trench where they had taken foot. Between Chauines and Rove a strong German reconnaissance was dispersed under tire before reaching our trenches. On the Aisne two other patrols were dispersed at Qirennevieres and Yingre. In the Champagne an enemy grenade attack on the advanced posts westward of the Butte de Mesnil was easily repulsed. On the loft bank of the Metise the Germans multiplied in the evening and night their offensives from Avocourt Wood to Hill 304. A series of most violent local attacks was preceded by intense bombardments accompanied by liquid fire on the two principal salients between Avocourt Wood and Hill 304. The attacks were broken by the French fire, with heavy losses. East of Hill 304. after several ineffectual assaults, the enemy took a fortification on the first line, the garrison being literally destroyed by the bombardment. At four in the morning a brilliant counter-attack retook the work. On the right bank the bombardment was liveliest north of le Souville and Tavannes. notably in the Chenois Wood, but no infantry attacks were launched.
