NEW ZEALANDTS POPULATION
ESTIMATED AT 1,165567. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Tho population of the Dominion at December 31, exclusive of Maoris and Islanders, was 1,102,825. There was an increase of 17,916 by excess of births over deaths, and an increase of 11,085 by excess of immigration "over emigration. Members of the Expeditionary Forces are included in emigration figures. The total population of the Dominion, including Maoris 49,844 and Islanders 12,598, was 1,165,267.
A girl of eighteen years, who had etolen 6/ and a slip bodice from a resident at the Salvation Army 'Maternity Home at Grey Lynn, where the girl herself was staying, came before Mr.F. V. Frazer, S.M., this morning and was sentenced to two months' imprisonment pending committal to an industrial school. Meantime she will be kept at the Parnell Rescue Home. The girl had with her a five-months' old baby, the father of which she had met only once, j and that casually in the street one night ! v?hen familiarity occurred, and as the , father was unknown and the mother mentally below normal and indigent the "baby was committed to the Auckland Industrial School as a ward of the State.
