ATTACK ON LEFT BANK OF NIEMEN REPULSED. RUSSIAN PROGRESS IN THE CARPATHIANS. WELLINGTON, March 24 The High Commissioner reports from London, on March 24:— Petrograd reports that the Russian detachment which undertook a reconnaissance towards Memcl, has fallen back into Russian territory. On the left bank of the Niemen, in the region of Mariampol, a German attack was repulsed with heavy loss to the enemy. Near Suwalki, on the East Prussian frontier, Russian cavalry, profiting by darkness and a snowstorm, captured a German supply column. "The guns of the fortress of Osowiec have achieved important results. The fire of the German siege batteries has slackened greatly. In the Carpathians the Russians progressed along the front from the Dukla Pass to the Upper San. They captured 3,500 prisoners and several guns. AUSTRIANS CLAIM SUCCESS IN USZOK PASS. AMSTERDAM, March 24. An Austrian official communique claims that violent Russian attacks were repulsed in the Uszok Pass, in the Eastern Carpathians, 3,300 prisoners being taken.
