CITY COUNCIL.

"THE STMOITDS STREET STOPS. TRAMWAY COMPANY CRITICISED. The ordinary meeting' ot the City Council was attended by the Mayor <31r C. J. Parr) and Mesrs Hall Skelton, B. T. •Michaels, G. J. -Garland, P. Parsons, P. 3. Nerheny, H. N. Bagnall, J. A. Warnock, E. C. Carr, G. Balldpn, A. J. ""ntrlcan, T. Thompson, F. Brltvwlen. A. Donald, H. D. I Heather, G. Knlg_t, J. M. Mennle. M. Casey, R. Tudebope, P. M. Mackay, B. S. Briggs, Geo. Read, J. Trevetrlck, and Miss Melville. •With reference to the Council's protest against the changing of the tram stop at the Symonds StTeet-Grafton Bridge crossing, the Tramway Company advised that the new stop was found to be more convenient than the old stopping place. The whole length of the ran between East Street and Karaogahape Itoad was poorly 'lighted, and It was advisable, to minimise possibility of accident to passengers alighting, to carry them across the lights of Karangahape Road to the well lighted • corner ■ now used as a stop. The I mechanically-operated points here were more easily operated than at the old posiI tion, and the stop was, further, convenient '■to waiting-room and adjacent verandahs. The new arrangement made it possible to j have a separate stopping point for cars I running from Remuera to Ponsonby, thus distinguishing these cars from those running to the city. The bulk of the down vehicle traffic in Symonds Street turned into Karangahape Road, and, with the stop in the old position, would run through the passengers alighting from cars at the old stopping place. For the reasons enumerated, the Company asked that; the -Council, should, agree to the tram stop being left in the present position. "This doesn't get away from the fact," said Mr Michaels, '.'that the Tramway Company has done ; this without asking the consent of the Council. That was what we objected to." After a short discussion, 'the predominant note of which was dissatisfaction with the existing state- of affairs, the question was referred to the Electric and Water Committee, the City Solicitor to be present. COT***iCl„ AXD" GOVERNMENT. The Newmarket Borough Council asked what steps the City Council would, take In the event of any railway bridge within Mb areas being re-decked by the Railway Department and the cost charged to the city. The Town Clerk reported that the Act provided for Government maintenance of the structure of such a .bridge.at its own expense, and for . the Government maintenance of the decking at the, cost, ot the local body concerned. The^Council decided to meet Newmarket representatives on Tuesday evening to discuss, the position. TITIBANGI PARK ROAD. The Waltemata County Council advised that an offer had been made by the; contractor now at work on the Tltlrangi Park Road tor carry It ithrongh to the-school for £30, towards Which the County Council would contribute _»,, provided the adjoining owners would raise the balance. The offer was referred to the Tttirangl Parks Committee for consideration. ANOTHER STUDENT OF METAL.
