Alfred John Burrows (45) was charged that on November 26* he broke and entered the swelling of Thomas O'Grady and stole a gold watch chain*, a sovereign -case containing five- sovereigns, _ gold medal, an overcoat and a gold chain valued at £23 9/. The evidence was to th e effect that Burrows was a donkeyman on the s_. Buteshire, and when arrested in 'Dunedin by Detective-sergeant Ward, on another charge, hau on him the medal which the detective recognised as belonging to Sergt. O'Grady. He had also a neckchain in his possession. Knowing that the dwelling attached to the Ponsonby ppyce statioiij.had been burgled when the Buteshire was at Auckland, the detective requested an explanation of -the possession of the neck-chain and medal. At first "Burrows said he traded in these things, and had brought them from Home, and later he said they had been given him by a fireman who had since deserted from the ship.
