LONDON, March 16. The "Daily Mails correspondent at Calais says that the British attack at Neuve Chapelle proved that the troops have not lost their dash during the winter. Their conduct exceeded their commander's highest hopes. The district is dotted with miners' little houses and ocasional slag heaps The Germans converted the houses into strongholds bristling with machineguns. The Germans left 2,000 dead behind them. It is estimated that altogether Aeir losses total 5,000 dead and at least 13.000 wounded. Fog is hampering the carrying out of further operations. Trie Allies' bombardment in the neighbourhood of Lille has compelled part of the German headquarters staff to retire to Tournai. It is believed that the Germans will shortly be forced to evacuate Lille. This will be a severe loss to them, because Lille is the junction of many ailway lines commanding Belgium.
