DEATH OF COUNT WITTE.

FAMOUS RUSSIAN STATESMAN. (Received 10.5 a.m.) PETROGRAD March 14. The death of Count Witte is announced. Count Sergius Witte, member of the Council of Empire, was born at Tiflis sixty-six years ago. He began his career in the Russian railway service, and also did a good deal of work for the newspapers. During the Russo-Turkish war he was director of traction of the southwest railways. In 1892 he was made Minister of Ways of Communications, and later became Minister of Finance aud Secretary of State to the Emperor. The late Count was one of the most important figures in Russian politics, and formed the first constitutional Ministry in Russia. He was responsible for the Portsmouth Treaty, which ended the RussoJapanese war.
