PIONEER SETTLER'S DEATH.

Tlrere passed away at his residence, lit. Albert, a pioneer of fifty years ago, Mr. Charles Hardy, who diej. ou Friday last after a very short illness at the ripe age of 82. The deceased was a native of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, where he was educated at the local grammar school. He spent several years in France and Spain after leaving -London, and then went to Australia at the time of the gold rush, but soon turned his attention to California, where he resided for eight years, following the teaching profession. 'He arrived in Now Zealand by the ship Aliquis, in 18G5. For over thirty years he resided at Dairy Flat being engaged in the bulk timber trade mo=t of the time. Upon his retirement he resided for some time at Heleasville "out then, fifteen years ago, removed to Mt. Albert, where lie has lived ever since. The late Mr. Hardy was held in respect by all who knew him, being upright in all his dealings and of a genial disposition, though somewhat of a retiring nature. He was a specially well read man and took a deep interest in all local matters. In former years he was an active advocate of educational facilities for the back block settlers. He was a man of strong religious convictions, Vind from early manhood had been connected with "the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He occupied the position of president of the New Zealand Mormon conference continuously for the last twenty-four years. Mr. Hardy leaves to mourn their loss his widow, two sons, and- four da/ujrhters, Mr. C. I. Hardy of Rose Road, Grey Lynn, a/nd Mr. Geo. Hardy, builder, of Coogec, N.S.W.. The daughters being Mesdamcs A. Beazley, Kd. A. Death, and Ed. Spencer, all of Mt. Albert, and Miss Florence Hardy. The funeral service, both at the house ftnd grave, was conducted , by Elder Cassidy and other representatives of the Mormon church.
